Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 Reignites Capcom DRM Controversy

12
Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 hit the PlayStation Network just yesterday, but already some fans are crying foul. The game listing on the PlayStation Store (via NeoGAF) says, "Note: You must log-in to the PlayStation Network each time to play the game."

Capcom ran into a similar controversy last year with the launch of Final Fight: Double Impact, which had the same connectivity requirement in the PS3 version.

At the time, a user on IGN shared a purported response from Capcom, saying the move was to combat "rampant" game sharing on the PlayStation Network. The representative said putting the requirement in Final Fight was a way to "evaluate impact."

Since it's built to deal with a PSN issue, the Xbox Live Arcade versions of Final Fight and Rearmed 2 don't require a live connection. The game seems to only check for a connection at start-up, so a disconnect while playing shouldn't end the game prematurely.

Those fascists are making you have an internet connection for ten seconds to verify you haven't stolen it? How dare they! I'm outraged!

You're right I guess it is becoming the norm to assume everyone is filthy pirate first even the people who PAY for the game.

This is basically punishing PSN users for Sony not having a hardware-bound security system like XBLA. That and Capcom is apparently afraid that their $15 game isn't going to sell as well as it's downloaded, if you know what I mean.

I understand some measures of DRM but an "always on" type of DRM is NOT the correct way of going about it. Ubisoft lost many sales from me last year and anyone who does the same thing will lose out on sales too.

If you read the story, you'll note that this isn't "always on" DRM. It just checks online at startup. Seems pretty reasonable that the game you download off of the Playstation NETWORK should require a connection to that network to play it. Then again, bitching is fun, too.

If your internet goes out, during the 10 seconds required to verify the game at the start-up, then just sue Capcom for not making sure your ISP was worth a damn.

You are missing the point entirely either on purpose or to just be a dick, I should be able to play a single player game THAT I BUY any time I want regardless of why or when my internet goes out. Do you follow now? You must be one of the special people who NEVER has issues with his ISP.

Lots of people have legitimate issues with that, including me.
