The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim Mod Support Confirmed

14
As if there were ever any doubt, Bethesda confirmed today that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will receive a modding kit allowing players to create new content for the RPG.

The Creation Kit, as it's called, was mentioned in the flood of details recently revealed but it wasn't clear what exactly it would be.

A modding kit seemed inevitable, really, as support for player-created content and mods has been a hallmark of Bethesda RPGs. Everything from UI tweaks and new quests to massive graphics overhauls and brand new, full-length campaigns have been created for its games by fans. It'd be mighty difficult to turn away from that sort of support.

Skyrim is slated to launch for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on November 11, 2011--11/11/11--though you shouldn't expect mod support on consoles.

    "A modding kit seemed inevitable"

Not too many devs that this phrase would apply to anymore. Thanks, Bethesda.

Needed one as, historically, it's the mods that actually unleash the potential that Beth invariably fails to achieve with the base game.

Eh... well... you can really say this about any game that offers modding support. Mods, by their definition, enhance the game beyond the base game.

I played through Fallout 3 and all of its expansions without using a single mod, so I wouldn't say it 'needs' player mods. Oblivion was another matter, but that was their first shot at a new system/ engine, so I'll give them some leeway there.

I was one of the apparent few that didn't like FO3. I wanted to but I just didn't like what it transitioned into. I think I'd give it another try for just about any reason because I love the IP. I keep hoping for a new package like FCOM for Oblivion. Just redo the entire game from the ground up.

I agree with you that enhancing the game is a mod's job. I just think that Beth in particular always tends to fall short. They make amazing worlds but then seem to fill them with sub-par content. That may even be overstated. They have very good content, too. There just seems to be something always lacking in their execution. Like they cut all the wrong corners or something.

Or it could just be me. I just don't know.

It's not just you. When you compare the writing on Fallout 3 to the writing in Fallout New Vegas, it becomes obvious where the problem is. Bethesda's writers are awful. If you spend more than a minute thinking about Fallout 3's main story, and the world as they present it to you, it is utterly incoherent.

"Incoherent", no. At least not any more than anything else that was birthed in the FO universe.

I'm pretty sure they realize mod support is the only thing keeping the PC market for their games competitive with the console one. Aside from mod users playing their game for hundreds of hours and being able to tell them exactly what's right or wrong with it, mod makers out-do their own programmers in every game, showing them what is possible with their own technology. Sure, they'll sell more copies on 360 and PS3, but that kind of feedback from PC more than makes up the difference.
