"The app will be available to download for iPhone and iPod Touch with OS 4 and above, and most Android compatible handsets with a minimum of OS 1.6," explains Sony.

While this is currently only announced for Europe, it stands to reason that this app will make its way to the US as well. The app will launch with the following features:

• Check out your PlayStation Network trophies and keep up to date with your friends' games and online status.
• Discover all the latest games, news and hardware for your PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2.
• Read all the announcements on the European PlayStation.Blog.
• Share your favourite products or news with your friends on Facebook, Twitter or via e-mail.

The first update will support more European countries and languages as well as add the ability to comment on PlayStation Blog stories.

Now, this is the part where I take a step back and point out that none of this is possible on the PlayStation Portable! Not only should this all be possible on my PSP, but I should be able to send and receive messages and earn trophies for PSP games. I guess Sony is full-steam ahead on the PSP2 at this point and doesn't see much purpose in going back and upgrading the PSP.

The Android version of this app could also be the pre-cursor to the rumored PlayStation Phone, which was said to run on Android. It's also an interesting move to support iOS as it is definitely a competitor with the PSP. It could also be a move to try and counter some of Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 momentum with its Xbox Live integration.
