Kinect Sells 1 Million Units in First Ten Days, On Pace to Hit 5 Million Unit Goal by Year's End

According to Microsoft, the Kinect hardware has "sold 1 million" units worldwide in the first ten days since the device launched. Microsoft announced Kinect's sales progress in a press release today and noted the hardware is on pace to hit its recently increased goal of selling five million units by year's end.

Available on November 4 for $150 in North America, the Kinect hardware is Microsoft's latest push into a more family-friendly gaming environment. Previously, the company had a halfhearted attempt with another camera, dubbed Xbox Vision. Kinect is also available in a number of console bundles.

"This is a great start to the holiday season," Microsoft's Don Mattrick was quoted in the release. "We will continue to work with our retailer partners to keep pace with high demand and deliver against our plan to sell more than 5 million Kinect sensors worldwide by the end of this year." If you're thinking of jumping in, make sure to read the Shacknews review of the hardware.

For contrast, Sony's PlayStation Move hardware launched on September 17 and the company announced it had "shipped" one million PlayStation Move controllers in North and Latin America within the first 30 days since the hardware's launch.

Microsoft did not specify sales in any particular region. Kinect was released in Europe on November 10 and will arrive in Asia on November 18 and in Japan on November 20.

    So, who regrets it already?

I have the Kinect and can say I am hoping for more integration in the dashboard coming soon. However all the kids who have been over to play, have loved it. I really like the fitness aspect and can say I don't have any buyers remorse.

It's the new hotness. Wait a month when you've river rafted for the umpteenth time, all the kids who are out there to come over have been over and have rafted 25 times a day for a couple days a week, and now they want something new to do.

Then wait a few more months for something new to do other than waving your hands and jumping up and down. And a few months after that. Will you be here talking about your buyer's remorse? Probably not. Instead, you'll be talking about your new PS3 Move you bought after you saw how great it controls Killzone 3, SOCOM, and Sorcery.

That shiny Kinect'll have dust all over it and it'll be obvious because of its shininess, I imagine. See, the thing is even IF Kinect gets tons of support from third parties, that support is at least six months to a year away. And all you've got promised from now through Fall of next year is a Star Wars game where you seem to LUNGE forward for no reason completely out of your control and... ....Children of Eden which will also be on other platforms, including Move?

Nothing MS has shown answers the problem that Kinect is poorly suited to traditional games and casual games like Wii Sports or Kinect Sports wind up growing very stale after a few weeks. With nothing else new and fresh coming, that's going to get pretty old. Then again, perhaps they'll have done the price drop by the time a good selection of titles arrives. If a selection of titles ever does, that is.

I've been using mine a lot on the weekends, seems to be great fun when the girlfriend and I have people over at the apartment.

I will say - I don't think i've boot it up once to play solo. But I don't regret the purchase.

I am concerned about post launch support. Steel Battallion and Star Wars Kinect are really the only half decent games I've heard of on the horizon, and even those are looking at mid to late 2011.

To be honest, I can see this device falling on its face by mid 2011 if they don't announce some games here soon. I'm hoping they still have a few cards they haven't played yet. 2011 right now looks kind of BLEH for Kinect support.
