Michael Jackson MMO 'Planet Michael' Announced

A free-to-play "massively multiplayer online virtual world" themed around the King of Pop is due to launch on PC next year, publisher SEE Virtual Worlds announced today.

Planet Michael is described by SEE as "a massive social gaming experience" with "collaborative in-game activities," set in "an immersive virtual space themed after iconic visuals drawn from Michael's music, his life and the global issues that concerned him."

It's being developed by MindArk as part of its CryEngine 2-powered MMO universe Entropia Universe, which also features sci-fi and rock music-themed planets. Like other Entropia planets, Planet Michael will have a free client but offer microtransaction features--some of which will also benefit charity, as Jackson would apparently want.

"In building a space worthy of those global connections, we envisioned a magical, enjoyable place that will capture that zest for fun and life that was at Michael's very core," said Martin Biallas, SEE Virtual Worlds' CEO, in the announcement. "Throughout his extensive career, the King of Pop was well-known for his visionary contributions to music, dance, fashion, entertainment and philanthropy, and it was critical that we somehow incorporate all of those elements into the game."

The co-executor of the deceased pop star's estate, John McClain, added that "Michael was always exploring creative new ways technology could enhance the experiences of his fans, and for that reason we are thrilled to be working with SEE Virtual Worlds to build a global interactive experience that befits an artist as innovative as Michael Jackson."

Planet Michael is scheduled to launch some time next year. If you need a ghoulish pop-themed video game sooner rather than later, though, you can always turn to Ubisoft's dance 'em up Michael Jackson: The Experience, which will arrive for Wii and DS on November 23 then other platforms next year.
