id Software's Rage Tech Shown off at 60FPS on iPhone
Carmack claims to have this engine up and running on the original iPhone, but may re-think backwards compatibility based on a quick straw poll of audience members that are still using original devices (it was 2).
Additionally, a game running on this engine will be released in 2010 ahead of the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 version of Rage, making this the first Rage product releasing at retail. An additional iPhone project will be released alongside the main game when it is released in 2011.
As for Android, Carmack explained that he re-examines the mobile markets every six months and thinks that, while the Rage engine could run on some Android devices, he isn't currently planning on porting it over to Google's mobile OS. Among his concerns, he cited the immaturity of the Android Marketplace, stating that "it looks somewhat painful for what [developers] are getting out of there now."
