Civilization 5 Demo Coming in September, Prior to Game's Scheduled Release
-
A demo before release, one thats not called a "beta" and linked to pre-orders or other moneymaking scams. What is this 1999?

It is sort of a weird thing to do really - the target audience for this game is already sold on it and would buy it with no demo based solely on the recent track record of the developer alone.
I guess it says that they're so confident with the game that they're not afraid of PREORDER CANCELLED. Maybe that's the real reason pre-release demos became so scarce - the snap judgment culture of the Internet plus the huge amount of competition means that some people are too quick to rush to the conclusion that they don't want to buy a game based off of a demo - which is the thing they've been clamoring for.
But since Civ5 has no competition really (other than Civ4 I guess) it makes sense that they'd have nothing to fear from releasing a demo. And it's pretty neat actually - it's sort of old school at this point.-
that is the exact reason demos aren't happening anymore, that and a gullible consumer base that will gladly give money without receiving a product, in the hopes of getting there first.
I no longer pre-order. being a PC gamer I rarely run into an issue of a store running out of stock so there's just no incentive for me to do it.

Let me know what store you're buying from, because the only game in town around here is Best Buy, and they seem to only buy 3 boxes for each PC game, and they don't restock after about 1 or 2 months after the game's release.
Compare this to their DS wall and the 16 pallets full of Madden 11 that are probably enroute for launch day.

Civ 5 will sell itself, the demo I see is serving two purposes. One being that its coming out purely for the benefit of Civ fans currently to get an early taste of the game and second to obviously entice players who have not yet played Civilization to get a chance to get hooked on it. Obviously if you already pre-ordered the game, I really doubt that anybody would honestly cancel their pre-order on purpose because the Demo sucked. Generally the progression of Civ games has generally been very positive.
