Microsoft Prices Kinect at $150, Reveals $200 4GB Xbox 360 Console and $300 Kinect Bundle

Microsoft has confirmed longstanding rumors that its upcoming motion-based peripheral Kinect will retail for $150 when it launches on November 4. Kinect will come bundled with Kinect Adventures, one of the mini-game collections featured during Mircosoft's E3 media briefing.

Alongside the pricing announcement, Microsoft revealed a $200 Xbox 360 "S Model," which includes 4GB of internal storage. According to Joystiq, the new model will go on sale on August 3 in North America.

Microsoft is also bundling the new, less expensive model with Kinect for $300. The internal storage, along with the ability to use up to 32GB of USB storage on the console makes the Arcade model infinitely more attractive than it has in the past.

Speaking with Joystiq, Microsoft's Aaron Greenberg said first-party Kinect software (including Harmonix' Dance Central) will be priced at $50, although retailers have priced third-party software for the peripheral at the (now) standard $60 price-point.

Microsoft promises that consumers who pre-order Kinect or the hardware bundle "today" will receive a token to download three exclusive levels for Kinect Adventures.

wow, even after a month of people saying that $150 will kill this project, they still go with that price point.

i've been trying to withhold judgement and give both MS and Sony the benefit of the doubt, but yeah... shit's DOA.

Their market research thinks otherwise. I tend to agree with them.

They are FAR from perfect, but they are batting close to a 1000 when it comes to consoles. So far...

I'd maintain their success was more aided by Sony totally screwing up and Nintendo taking a hugely more successful but alternate path.

If Sony had kept developer support, matched price and offered free multiplayer, I think MS would have had a very tough time with the 360.

This is totally true. I'm glad it turned out well for them because I dig the indie support, but still...it's true.

Their market research said that value priced phones that were ALMOST smartphones that had heavily discounted data plans would do well.

Unfortunately, Microsoft internally decided to let the Kin die in favor of W7 phones and Verizon declined the opportunity to offer discounted data plans.

So died the Kin. Don't be surprised when a new iteration of the same idea shows up in the future with W7 underpinnings and with discounted data plans that they describe as, "We learned from the mistakes of Kin." Except they already knew it was going to fail when they let it out the gate because they had no intention of supporting a non-W7 Kin and W7 phones, too.

Kin was a victim of internal politics within Microsoft. From what I've read, the price of Kinect was going back and forth due to the same internal wrangling that could not decide if they should lose money ($100 or lower) or try to make money ($150) on the hardware at the cost of momentum.

It would appear someone inside of Microsoft is not as confidant of Kinect success as they claim. If they were, they'd have priced it low and made the money back on software because they would have been under the (perhaps false) conviction of success. I think the people who decided its not a sure thing anymore saw all the negative feedback from the stories about 1) The Cirque de Disasterle, 2) The very apparent lag problems, 3) The Lack of Non-Party games, 4) The Voice Control Only for videos while sitting, 5) No games while sitting?, 6) A Microsoft Site telling people the answer to the question of, 'Can I enjoy Kinect while sitting?' is, 'You can enjoy watching others play a game.'" Contrast that with the people who go into E3 with a notion that PS3 Move has lag and come out saying, "Wow, the lag has REALLY improved, its virtually unnoticable!" and "PS3 Move is supporting a wide range of games, not just party games," and Microsoft is not as certain the horse they bet on was the right one.

Next year, they'll have added a Move-like controller to this fiasco and the year after that, when Natal technology that was priced at $150 is now on clearance at Target for $20.88, they'll be announcing a new console to restart the process but with a Wii-like controller setup in combo with an enhanced (but incompatible with the older tech) Natal camera.

$150 is a sure sign that they vote no confidence in Kinect. Can't say I'm surprised. When Dance Party is announced for PS3 Move, who'll buy Kinect then?

I'm pretty sure they will probably go with focus testing, market research, etc., whether than what the internet thinks a good price is.
