Morning Discussion

While I hugely enjoyed Dawn of War 2, for some unknown reason I neglected to pick up the Chaos Rising expansion until the weekend Steam deal reminded me of it. It's lovely, really. The campaign is even better than DoW2's, with more equipment options, better mission design and the enjoyable corruption mechanic. Boss battle, unfortunately, remain a weak speak and I'm forced to repeat the same stupid trick over and over to whittle down the boss's thousands upon thousands of HP. On the whole, splendid.

I'm looking forward to seeing how the new units and Chaos faction work in multiplayer.

    So, Deus Ex 3. It's a game.

I was thinking about what cool things there were in Invisible War that they could bring back. It isn't a long list (obviously), but the Glass Destabilizer weapon mod was awesome, as was the Bot Domination aug.

The general idea of having weapon mods provide significant alternate functionality was pretty cool.

Though I suppose this is irrelevant as Deus Ex 3 is going to be terrible whatever.

Cynicism helps me avoid getting hurt. When they say they're going to update the game 'for a new generation of gamers' I think it's fair to assume it will be shite.

Though they have at least said it will be single-player only which gives me some hope.

It depended on limited energy and (by requiring biocells) player performance, as well as giving up a different augmentation. It wasn't the "the entire game is a training session" modern style of regen health. Basically portable medipacks without the in-combat instant heals.

"new generation of gamer" eesh, i dont like the sound of that. Whenever i hear that trite marketing speak, i think of cover systems and regenerating health >:(

I seem to recall them mentioning regenerating health way back, so feel free to start feeling disappointed now!

I consider Deus Ex one of the best games of all time, but like most, I HATED invisible war. So now I see Dx3 being announced I sit here and I have no illusions, I have no expectations. I wait to be impressed and I honestly hope I am, but the ball is in their court.

Screenshots appeal to me in a sweet tech-geek love spawn of Matrix and Equilibrium which is probably enough for me. I expect they will be starting completely from scratch to avoid any comparisons to the other games. Just have to hope for a good game, regardless of the name.

It's like someone made a Bond movie and Bond is a dude who talks like Dr. Phil and has an annoying comedic sidekick.

I was disappointed with the glass destabilizer mod. I thought it'd "melt" a small section of the glass, allowing the bullet to punch through with a thud sound without breaking the entire pane.

I'm really interested to see how it turns out. I only played Deus Ex last year (and loved it), so it doesn't occupy some lost golden age of gaming for me, and I don't feel the inexplicable urge to search for a No Mech-augs Allowed site where I can truly express my disdain about each announcement.

Most of the interviews that have been given so far have been with the art director, so there hasn't been a whole lot of insight into their design philosophy on the gameplay, but I've still been intrigued by what I've heard. The Renaissance styling sounds like it could be awkward and annoying, but as a visual cue and affectation of a particular faction, it could be also be kind of cool. Similarly, after watching the trailer, I thought the protagonist looked kind of dumb with his wispy moustache and pointy beard. However, I later read that his look was based on Don Quixote, which was so odd and unexpected that I had to revisit my opinion; it still looks kind of goofy, but now it's kind of cool, too. I'm sure some people will see it as pretentious fluff, but it heightens my interest. I take it as a sign that their attitude is to bring some level of personal creativity to the game, which raises exciting possibilities. Maybe the game will be terrible, maybe the game will be great, but for the moment, I'm watching it closely.

There was a another shacker that summed Deus Ex 3 pretty well in another thread, something along the lines of:

Hai Guys BIOSHOCK sold pretty well, let's take our IP and do that too.

      So be prepared.
