Atari Co-founder Nolan Bushnell Rejoins Company as Board Member

Atari issued a press release today noting some interesting changes to its Board of Directors. Nolan Bushnell - industry veteran, icon, and co-founder of the original Atari, Inc. - has rejoined the group at Atari's helm.

One of the grandfathers of modern video gaming, Bushnell helped launch the Atari 2600, has started over twenty companies, and has been inducted into both the Video Game Hall of Fame and the Consumer Electronics Association Hall of Fame. He also shared his thoughts on rejoining Atari after all these years:

I am very excited to be reacquainted with Atari at a time when it is poised to make interesting strides in key growth areas of the games industry. The company and its iconic brands have always been important to me, and I look forward to further guiding them at the board level.

The acquisition of Bushnell accompanies another announcement that Phil Harrison has resigned from the very same board. Harrison had been the President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios until his departure in early 2008 when he assumed the mantle of Atari President. Harrison then stepped down from his role as president to become the non-executive director on Atari's board in May of 2009.

There's no official word yet as to where Harrison's headed next, but if he's lucky, maybe he'll get his very own bio-pic starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Just like Bushnell.

Pretty cool to see things come full circle with Nolan. It'll be interesting to see what he dreams up.

Makes me smile thinking of when I got my 2600 at the ripe old age of 4.
