QuakeCon 2010 Announced

id Software's annual celebration of fragging, friendship and sharing pornography, QuakeCon, will return to the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas this year from August 12 to 15, id's fellow ZeniMax Media subsidiary Bethesda Softworks has announced.

The free event will once again host developer talks, tournaments and a giant 'Bring Your Own Computer' LAN. Further details are due "in the coming weeks" though CEO Todd Hollenshead promised last year that id would reveal more of Doom 4 at QCon 2010.

2009's festivities included the first public showing of Rage, Quake Live and dodgeball tournaments, tech workshops and, of course, John Carmack's famous keynote speech.

Bethesda's involvement in QCon 2009 included the first public showing of Brink--which it is publishing--and a presentation by Bethesda Game Studios executive producer Todd Howard. It's highly likely that Fallout: New Vegas will be on show in some form this year.

The Hilton Anatole hosted QuakeCon from 2006 to 2008 and was due to be invaded by rampaging geeks once again in 2009 before id switched venue to the Gaylord Texan.

However, a shadow hangs over one customary component of QuakeCon. The maker of energy drink--and source of countless jokes that are no doubt hilarious--Bawls has entered restructuring to cut costs and possibly prepare the company for sale. It's yet unclear whether this will affect the traditional Bawls Chugging Contest.

That's a shame, I heard the Gaylord was pretty nice actually.

THat's where it was in 2007. It was pretty nice. Not over-the-top-holy-shit-nice like the Gaylord, but a fine hotel nonetheless.

The Hilton Anatole to me always felt like that store in the mall where your grandmother buys blouses.

it's much more of a normal place than the gaylord, which was wtf ridiculous. it's still a nice place and pretty big, but the gaylord was just fucking out of control. it's like Texas Stadium compared to Cowboys Stadium

I remember reading something from Todd that said that the hotel management was a lil PO'd about the amount of pot smoking going on, so iD decided to change venues. I'm not positive, but at this point, the reason for choosing the venue probably has to do with economics and capacity...

My wife is in the event industry (wedding planner) and while she has no specific knowledge of the Gaylord (we're also in the Metroplex) it stands to reason that when the economy was good, the Gaylord could easily pick and choose what conventions go on there. When the economy went in the shitter, they probably got desperate. Same as the Anatole, which probably made so much more money from the pharmaceutical convention that replaced QuakeCon that they could go without QuakeCon entirely.

Not impossible the same thing could happen this year but the economy isn't as dire so probably not.

Yeah definitely... also, my post might read a lil weird, but what I was trying to convey was that the iD guys weren't bothered by the partying going on during Quakecon, the venue was. iD was making a point of accommodating Quake fans first, the venue second, hence the change a few years ago.

It isn't bad but parking is pretty expensive / craptastic, it is out in the boondocks, and hotel security is reichific
