'Make Something Unreal' Contest Winners Crowned
Horror shooter mod 'The Haunted' was named grand prize winner after several rounds of awards and eliminations, which Epic explains is due to "a winning formula of intense survival horror gameplay, rich multiplayer modes, and nightmarish themed graphics."
- The Haunted - Michael Hegemann and Team.
- The Ball (UDK Standalone) - Toltec Studios
- Angels Fall First: PlanetStorm - AFF Team
- Prometheus (UDK Standalone) - Rachel Cordone
- Hazard: The Journey of Life - Alexander Bruce
Both The Ball and Prometheus are available as standalone versions powered by the Unreal Development Kit. Toltec is also working on a commercial version of The Ball.
The Haunted's developer will receive $50,000 and a commercial Unreal Engine 3 license, to use as they see fit. Previous winner Tripwire Interactive is currently using its prize license to develop a commercial sequel to its winning mod Red Orchestra.

This makes me sad. I'm sure these are top notch mods, but so few people bought Unreal Tournament 3 I doubt even anyone will download these winners :(. (Last I checked in 2008 Unreal 3 only sold around 50,000 to 100,000 copies)

Whats sad is that these mods built with the blood and sweat of true gamers, are usually 100x more fun then developers who spend millions in r&d , and post production. These are the guys who should be leading Epic.
Another saddening fact is that most of these great designers get sucked up by companies like epic, make their mod into a commercial package then get put on Gears of War 3. Even though i mainly play my ps3 now since i can't afford to upgrade my rig, PC gaming will always be the brightest jewel in the crown of gaming just because of mods. -
