This post was originally going to be filled with vague references to Santa Buddies: The Legend of Puppy Paws, as the latest trailer for Volatile's Dead to Rights: Retribution features some bloody snippets of the game's playable canine companion.

But then I got to the end, which sees our human hero throw an enemy on the ground and then fire a rocket into his face at point-blank range, and, well, it inspired me.

Dead to Rights: Retribution. PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Q1 2010. Woof.

This would be okay for a crappy "next gen" demonstration from the PS2 era. But right now, no thanks.

The frame rate and options for close combat looked great. You fail at understanding what makes a game great, hint, it's more then just looks.

The dog animations actually look pretty cool.

While true to a degree, this game looks both dull and uninspired, also boring.

So basically exactly like the original. Only, I think, with worse animation.

          Pass.

If you're playing a major current-generation console release with a big budget behind it - which this game is - then the only reason it could look like shit is because the developer doesn't have very good artists.

I'm not an amazing artist myself, but even I could pull of better walk cycles than what is shown there.

          Prove it, Mr. Kow.

If you can really animate better than these guys who do it for a living, then you won't have any aversion to proving it since you'll have nothing to lose.
