Weekly PC Sales: Left 4 Dead by Modern Warfare 2, Dragon Age, Borderlands and Torchlight

30
Update: According to Big Download and Blue's News, Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders were listed as Steam's second top-grossing game for the week of 11/8 - 11/14, though it seems that listing disappeared after the game launched on November 17.

Original: The week before Left 4 Dead 2's release curiously saw Valve's zombie shooter get left behind by digital customers, as online pre-orders for the sequel slipped from the number three spot on Steam's top ten to, well, a position not listed on the chart.

Unsurprisingly, sales juggernaut Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 topped Steam's charts, with Direct2Drive, which refuses to sell MW2, seeing Dragon Age reign again.

That makes no sense at all, every time I've looked on the Steam store, L4D2 has been number one or two on top sellers!

Since it updates every Sunday I'm going to guess it doesn't include pre-orders. L4D2 will be there next week I'm sure.

Their top-seller list on the store might count pre-orders though, and it may not even sort on actual numbers.

Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders were listed the week before, in the number three spot.

This is from last week, before Left 4 Dead was released. Pre-orders were at number 1 for a while but that changed with other big releases. MW2 was at #1 when it came out for instance.

Oh weird, it's not on the list at all.

I did some digging. It looks like the Left 4 Dead 2 pre-orders were listed at #2, but then disappeared from the chart once it was released.

sounds like a bug in steam's tracking

Steams one is by revenue. So with MW2 being an eye gougingly hilarious £40 in the UK and L4D was only £26 you can kinda see why it would be on top, but L4D2 being completely absent is odd. Could be that everyone who was going to pre-purchase it did it much earlier.

or people don't want to buy overpriced DLC.

Anyone trying to claim that L4D2 is just overpriced DLC is a complete moron. Yeah, that's right, I said it. Whether they like it or not is not the issue. Anyone who has actually played the game can see that there is far more to it than any DLC would provide. MW2 on the other hand....

s/"Steam store"/"ShackNews". ShackHype is a sort of self-contained engine of hype energy that not only comsumes all contrary opinion but feeds on itself.

For reference, the ShackHype Digital Download Top 10 this week were:

      #0: Left 4 Dead 2
      #1 and #2: Modern Warfare 2
      #Boner: Torchlight
      #5: Team Fortress 2
      #6: Dragon Age
      #7: Crysis Bundle
      #H8: Borderlands
      #9: Mass Effect
#10: People trying to pre-order the Torchlight MMO

Are you sure people activating their games doesn't count in some way? Because every time a game is released which ties to steam the sales numbers soar and i doubt everyone would wait until after the preorder sale to buy it off steam

I'm kind of thinking that Steam pre-orders, being final (unlike at retail) would perhaps just show in the charts week to week.

If so it would make sense that on release day, where preorders stopped and so did the 10% off that sales would be a little drab.

Perhaps looking at the active players will give a better rough idea of sales. Looks like 2:1 or 3:1 in MW2's favour. (link http://store.steampowered.com/stats/ )
