Resident Evil 5 Director's Cut Details Emerge

Following word of an expanded Resident Evil 5 release and the revelation of a motion-controlled PlayStation 3 re-release, Capcom has unveiled additional details on a new Resident Evil 5 mission coming to both PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in the future.

The new content allows players to experience Chris Redfield and Jill Valentine's assault on Ozwell Spencer's horror-filled castle, an event that took place three years prior to Resident Evil 5 and constitutes a major plot point for the zombie-shooting game.

This new mission won't be released as downloadable content, according to IGN, as it became "too large to be offered as a download." However, the site also reports that producer Jun Takeuchi, in a chat with Japanese publication Famitsu, "would not rule out being able to play the new episode between the two versions [original and re-release]."

In all, Takeuchi said to expect two hours of gameplay from the new mission, which supports both single-player and co-op play.

The enhanced PlayStation 3 re-release of Resident Evil 5, which also sports the traditional control scheme and has been referred to as both "Alternative Edition" and "Director's Cut," is due in Japan next spring. It'll be compatible with save games from the original release of Resident Evil 5, and will also allow owners of both the original and the re-release to play online co-op together, at least during the regular campaign.

As for when (or how) Xbox 360 owners will get their hands on the new content, Capcom has yet to say, with the developer having only confirmed that it will hit the system and promised future details. Whether or not the mission will hit PC remains to be seen.
