Following up on the announcement of a $400 Modern Warfare 2-themed "limited edition" Xbox 360 that comes with a 250GB HDD, Microsoft has clarified that the console's largest hard drive yet will not be sold separately.

"This hard drive is not being sold separately," Xbox Live programming director Larry 'Major Nelson' Hryb noted during a video examining the bundle, embedded below.

Microsoft currently sells two different configurations of the Xbox 360 hardware--the $200 Arcade, which has 512MB of storage, and a $300 Elite that comes with a 120GB HDD.

The 120GB hard drive is available separately for $150, a purchase geared towards those with an Arcade unit or an earlier model of the Xbox 360 with a smaller hard drive. A 60GB HDD, 3 months of Xbox Live and a headset are also available in a $100 bundle.

Along with game saves, the Xbox 360's hard drive is used to store downloaded content, such as full games and game add-ons, optional game installs, music and more.

"Not being sold separately. Until later when we're not producing the limited edition anymore and we're willing to sell you the bare drive for $150."

the 120GB is still $160. Can't imagine what the 250 would retail for.

Well, considering the 120GB HD runs about $1.50 a gig, your looking at about $375.

Likely it would sell for $160 and they'd drop the 120GB to a mere $100 or so. (just guessing by how prices have recently been adjusted, you get the same hardware for one price tier lower)

They would likely replace the 120 GB drive with the 250 GB drive and keep the price the same and then phase out the 120GB drives for $99 bucks.

Or they will just stop manufacturing the 120GB drives (in accessories) and let them disappear from stores for 3 months while pushing the new consoles with the larger drives, and then release the 250 GB drive as an accessory for the $150 price point.

I have a feeling I should hold off buying a new hard drive just yet...
