The Creative Assembly will kick off a new story-driven branch of its PC strategy series 'Total War' with a game focused on Napoleon Bonaparte, owner Sega announced today.

Napoleon: Total War will tell the Emperor of the French's tale in three individual campaigns, from his early conflicts in Italy and Egypt, through his assaults on Russia, finally leading to the Battle of Waterloo, where, my my, Napoleon did surrender.

Interestingly, Creative Assembly reveals that, "The game allows you to step in the shoes of his opposing generals as well, allowing the player to rewrite history as they see fit."

Improvements over the previous instalment, Empire: Total War, are promised in several areas, including both land and naval battles, the diplomacy system and campaign map.

Are they going to make it so that if you surround an enemy city with four, full-strength armies when they have almost nothing, that the enemy will actually surrender?

Would you surrender if given such a choice by the enemy?

The diplomacy and strategic-map AI is undoubtedly busted. Enemies are NEVER willing to accept peace offers, no matter how favorable the terms. The French empire in E:TW is focused on one gigantic territory, and a few ancillary lands. In a recent Prussian campaign of mine, France declared war on my massive empire, angry with my "Territorial Expansion" on their borders. Fine. But France wasn't even willing or able to pull their ally Spain into the war on their side, the only real hope they had of resisting my own forces.

I swiftly conquered every territory they owned, save the small Alsace-Lorraine territory. Paris, and the core territory it represented, had been easily conquered. Spain was still neutral. My own ally (Sweden) had recently dropped some armies in the area. I had a full stack besieging their last remaining territory, Alsace-Lorraine, and had a clear advantage in that final battle. I pulled up diplomacy and offered the French ALL the territory they held before declaring war in exchange for peace, and still they refused. I've seen this behavior again and again. It's virtually impossible to, as far as I can tell, to get a peace agreement signed with any enemy you've engaged in battle, regardless of the terms.

I've seen this same scenerio repeated again and again in E:TW. The AI in campaigns are consistently reckless and stubborn. The original poster was right to point out the serious flaws that are still present in the 1.3 version of E:TW. Fortunately, the 1.4 patch promises multiplayer campaigns. The AI will still be a hindrance in multiplayer, but at least that second player will lend the game a bit of sense for once.
