Canceled StarCraft 2 Units Show Up in the Campaign: Firebat, Medic, and a Dragoon Sighting

It's easy to look at a screenshot and think that StarCraft II hasn't changed much from the original game, but in playing recent builds, it's getting further and further away from its progenitor. Case in point, several standard StarCraft units have been axed in favor of a more diverse selection of new, specialized units. The Terran Firebat has been replaced by the Marauder, the Medic by the Medivac Dropship, and the Protoss Dragoon by the Stalker and Immortal units.

But following a play session at Blizzard some weeks ago, I've learned that several of these classic units will still show up in the Wings of Liberty campaign.

The Terran Firebat and Medic will be playable as standard singleplayer units, both unlocked after completing various missions. Fans of the Dragoon may also have some hope of an appearance by the four-legged unit.

During a skirmish round, I encountered a chance bug that allowed me to build a Dragoon from a standard Gateway. The unit's artwork was incomplete, and its icons were carried over from the original game, but there it was regardless.

When asked about the Dragoon sighting, a Blizzard rep told me that the unit was definitely not being added to multiplayer, but rather that it could possibly show up in the singleplayer campaign--no doubt with its "I have returned" line feeling a bit more ironic.

Too bad, I loved the medic and her sexy innuendos...

Yeah... I'm pretty shocked they axed the dragoon -- it was by far the most powerful unit before the expansions.

what? i mean they are good, but theres no such thing as "most powerful unit" in starcraft...

if you're talking about bang for your buck, defiler or templar have that unit beat hands down
