Duke Nukem 3D Coming to iPhone 'Very Soon'

18
An iPhone and iPod Touch release of 3D Realms' classic shooter Duke Nukem 3D is due "very soon," according to IGN.

Mobile developer Machineworks Northwest, responsible for the iPhone and iPod Touch release of Prey Invasion, is handling the port.

As with Prey Invasion, Duke Nukem 3D will use on-screen control bars (seen above) for movement and aiming, with firing handled either by tapping a foe or the fire button. The port is said to contain the "entire game," complete with the iconic one-liners and "subtly upgraded" visuals, with no word yet on a price or solid release date.

3D Realms had previously teased that a total of three Duke Nukem games were headed to the iPhone, with the remaining two projects still shrouded in mystery.

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Will buying this help fund Duke Nukem Forever?
Either way, I will be getting this. I sure as fuck hope it contains some WiFi / 3G Dukematching. That'd be sweet.

looked into the possibility of 3G multiplayer, but the latencies just aren't good enough -- I see 380 or so pings from my phone to local servers. This was interesting, because I have talked to other hardware vendors that claim 3G latencies of half that. I'm not sure if there are issues with the iPhone, issues with AT&T's network in Dallas, or if the vendor was just mistaken about what they were getting. One anecdotal report is that iPhones work better in Japan than here, so it may be infrastructure.

With SpeedTest app on my iPhone, I get this:

Speeds over a 3G network with Rogers Wireless
250Kb/s Down (Peak was over 500Kb/sec)
35Kb/s Up (Peak was about 40Kb/sec)
Ping: 251 (I don't really ever get my Ping to be lower than 200ms)

I think a 250 ping is too high... (queue 1998), if we got it to half that, it'd work no problem.

250 is ok with prediction like quakeworld had. 300 max. Most people get worse latency than 300 on 3g though at least in the USA

It's over half a second for most of the US.

He said he couldn't get 3G multiplayer done in time for the release, and will release it sometimes down the road. It can be done, but requires a bit more work. He wanted Doom to be released a week or so ago, but EA is holding on to it.
