The PS3 edition of the legendary role-playing game hits Japan this winter, while Europe and North America get the game on both Xbox 360 and PS3 no earlier than April 2010.

Utterly mind-blowingly gorgeous, but the turn based shit still looks utterly absurd to me. :/ Only game I didn't mind that kind of combat in is ChronoTrigger

I'm actually getting a bit of Chrono Trigger vibe off of this. From what I saw of the video, there was no transition to a battle screen, just a menu that popped up. If this holds true for the entire game, I am incredibly excited.

Versus may be more to your liking when it comes out.

Interestingly I am ok with it in Lost Odyssey. I am about a quarter of the way through the game and I've only been in like 50 battles... ok it's probably more but it's less than in most FF games. The battles are hardish and tactics are important enough to keep it interesting.

I think turn based combat is ok in an adventure game with strategic combat... but it blows in an action game. I feel like FF games try to be action games and the combat breaks the mood. FFXII being the exception, I loved that combat system, but it wasn't really turn based.

This is no more or less turn-based than FFXII. And FFXII used the same basic structure as every FF title from IV to IX did.

In the old games, your bar filled up, and once it was full, you chose an action. In FFXII, same basic deal, except that you could use gambits to script certain actions to minimize the need for mindless button presses.

In this, your bar fills up, but you can choose up to three actions, things can happen simultaneously (like in FFX-2), and as best I can tell, you can choose to attack/cast/etc sooner, once the bar hits the mark for the first and/or second actions.

Are you kidding? If they bring turn based combat back in this game it'll be amazing. FF-6, FF-7 and FF-X were the best FF games by far and they all have deep turn based combat, don't mess with perfection Square. Too bad the game is still a year+ off.... And then I wonder when the sequel will come FF-XIII Versus.

If you don't want it, more turn based combat for me to enjoy!
