Sony Cuts PlayStation 2 Price
Industry analyst EEDAR believes the price cut will help sustain PlayStation 2 software sales, which it estimates to be 21% of all home console software sales last quarter and predicted to drop to 16% this quarter--a figure EEDAR has now revised to 18%.
Sony also boast that the PlayStation 2's game library will reach over 1900 titles this year.
Many have been predicting Sony would reduce the PlayStation 3's price as part of the ongoing 'console wars,' where the PS3 lags behind Microsoft's Xbox 360. The cheapest PS3 model costs $399 while Microsoft's hard drive-less Xbox 360 Arcade is only $199.

This was the big announcement? What a joke.

At this point I'd pay the $99 for a PS3/PS2 backwards compatability software update.
Sadly, even if this was technically possible, it is looking far more likely that Sony are just biding their time until they roll out downloadable PS2 games ove Playstation Network. Even worse is that I know full well that I would buy 4-5 games that I already own all over again.-

The truth is it made the console too expensive so they thought removing it would save on the cost but at the same time force people to have to upgrade to a PS3 to play ps3 games... little did they know that the failure of their machines isn't the hardware itself but their failure to attend to the hearts of hardcore gamers of which this platform was targeted to.
I thought the announcement would be about a PS3 price cut or some other form of creating a centralized online service for multiplayer gaming.. i guess I was wrong and now this 'worthy news' is nothing more than a lackluster excuse for a press release.-

I'm not going to turn this into a console war thread... there's enough of those already.
I've been a PS3 owner for the longest time and waited for the support of Sony for better online capabilities. I drew the last straw with the release of PS Home. It did nothing to getting better match play and quick games.
Say what you want about XBOX bla bla bla but when I see 20,000k games being played at the same time my PS3 shows 7,000 for CoD5 (example) and almost instant games for Nazi Zombies (mod on CoD5) I had enough. Same goes for any other game from Street Fighter 4 to any cross platform titles that have come out recently or even a year ago like CoD4.
I WISH PS3 had this... i really do. But I've been recently trading in my PS3 titles over to 360's because of this 'problem' that Sony refuses to address.
"no issues with PS3's library"?? I don't even have to get into multiplayer aspects of hardcore gaming... where the hell are my RPG's?? 2-3 strong PS3 titles to 360's ass load of RPG's that have come out? WTF sony.. if anything I thought they would've given me at least that.
In essence this isn't a 360 vs PS3 issue.. it's a Sony doesn't give a fuck issue.

Why do you think they are biding their time without a working software emulator? How do you expect downloadable PS2 games from PSN to work on all units without one? Or are you saying that you really think they are working on an emulator but not planning to release it, keeping it only for use with the downloadables?
