Left 4 Dead Survival Pack Release Dated

52
According to a Microsoft press release issued this morning, Left 4 Dead's Survival Pack DLC will be released on April 21. This release concerned the Xbox 360 version but Valve traditionally releases its PC content in a timely manner, and has previously stated that it will come by April 21.

The free Survival Pack adds the new Survival game mode, where players are given time to dig in before fending off unceasing zombie hordes in an attempt to survive as long as possible. Survival Mode is played on 12 new maps--11 being sections of existing levels and 1 created especially for Survival Mode, Lighthouse.

The Survival Pack also brings Versus mode to the final two co-op campaigns, Dead Air and Death Toll. This release coincides with the release of Left 4 Dead: Critics Choice Edition, which contains the original game plus the Survival Pack.

Valve has been contacted for confirmation of the PC release date.

So disappointed with this. I guess it is my fault for assuming Valve's first priority when releasing DLC for Left4Dead would be more campaigns, given there were only 4 in the retail release. I hope we do see new campaigns eventually, as that is what will really extend this game's lifespan for me. Even with only 4 campaigns the game has lasted a long time, even just 1 would extend that even further.

Given how the campaigns have been created, I can definitely see why it would take a significantly longer time to create a new campaign.

Each campaign takes place in an entirely distinct environment with very little in the way of shared assets. The amount of custom textures and models in each area is fairly significant, and given Valve's modus operandi of playtesting each area to death in an "orange box" state before even starting to make it look good, you can see why it would take a significant amount of time to create a 4-5 map campaign.

I completely understand that, and I am sure they are in development. It would be nice to have any assurance that they are on the way, as we haven't heard anything from Valve.

Two more campaigns for VS sounds like the bomb to me. The first two are still fun as hell with good friends in the game.

Its two campaigns that are already in the game, its really bullshit that they were not in the retail release.

you also aren't paying for it, so you have no right to complain.

classifying this as DLC is silly anyway, they are really just reworking their existing content and releasing 1 new map.

The new campaigns will cost money, at least for the 360 folks, if not PC as well. Be sure of it.

there was no miscommunication on how many campaigns were playable at launch(and you bought it understanding that only 2 campaigns were playable on VS), it was publicly understood that the other 2 campaigns would be made available and they would be free. they are now coming out, and they are free.

This is a multiplayer only game that people bought with the expectation that there would be added content.

this is not a multiplayer only game, maybe that's what you purchased it for but that's not what it is. I understand that you wanted the other VS maps on launch day but you don't buy what you want, you buy what they release. You paid for what they were releasing, and they were kind enough to tell you up front that you would get the other 10 maps (not 2 maps, 10) when they were ready. They have no faltered on any of these expectations. Your sense of entitlement to something that was not part of the original purchase is laughable at best.

versus is not the only game mode either. L4D launched with 20 playable maps, and 10 playable in a second game mode. Short of Q3, I dont think many FPS games launch with this amount of online content.

It isn't multiplayer only. What was released definitely was great value for the buck. Especially considering how the campaigns change up each time. Each time you play it's a different experience. Easily the best coop game ever.

Don't you mean TEN versus maps? It bothers the shit out of me when people bitch about the "two vs maps" without realizing they are confusing a CAMPAIGN with a MAP (with a 5:1 ratio for maps to campaigns, you're so far off it's stupid).

And yes, since it's free you can't complain. You took a chance that content would be released within your preferred time frame, and now chance isn't working out the way you wanted. Welcome to reality. Quit bitching about how it isn't worth its price point as-is, because you paid it.

In an alternate time-line, Valve post-pones release of the game to ensure inclusion of all 4 co-op maps as Versus mode maps.

End result? manlyman complains that the delay is "really bullshit" and we have nothing to play at all yet.

I prefer this time-line: Release a fairly polished experience for me to enjoy. Meanwhile, work on more content and release it to me FREE OF CHARGE.

Always something to complain about (I should know!). Let's look at the bigger picture, shall we?

In an alternate time-line, Daikatana was good too, I would have liked them to delay it to include all of them, but I can wait for something good, most whiners can't, it's why they whine :(

blood harvest/no mercy have been tweaked in many places in order to balance it. i'm hoping there will be similar tweaks in the other two campaigns as some parts are just impossible as infected.

Sums up my feeling. I bought it on the assumption that the main failing of the game - lack of maps - would be addressed quickly.

Dude. FREE. And new content. And new modes. And new vs capability for stuff we already had. Did I mention free? I'm happy. Give them more time. We'll likely see more Left 4 Dead campaigns as DLC or sequels. I'd think though that I'd have to pay for such a thing.

Well, it took some 3-4 years to make 4 levels, it'll probably take another 10-12 months to make one more, at least.
