Nintendo continued its steady reign over the industry in January, taking the top three slots on the US console software charts with Wii Fit, Wii Play and Mario Kart Wii.

In the hardware sector, the Wii and Nintendo DS easily lead the field. Microsoft's Xbox 360 claimed a 3:2 margin over Sony's PlayStation 3, while the PlayStation 2 still managed another 100,000 sales.

The industry as a whole performed well despite the economic recession, boasting a 13% bump in total revenue over January 2008.

Let's get down to the numbers. The January 2009 software sales:

  1. Wii Fit (Nintendo, Wii) - 777,000 units

I'm (pleasantly) really surprised by how well Left 4 Dead is doing.

Yeah, it's pretty cool. Glad all the hard work (and slick marketing) paid off for them.

I wouldn't ever have expected it to be topping a Call of Duty title. I just didn't think it had that level of mass market appeal. Glad to be wrong.

In general, Call of Duty outsold Left 4 Dead by quite a lot. Still it did well, but both titles are falling to the wayside as 2009 goes on.

Um, I am sure they will, but that falling isn't present tense, as they are the leading fps titles right now. Both are very popular online as well.

While I prefer the PC version the console version is actually really good, mostly because of the split screen coop. Having someone else in the room with you makes it so much more fun.

Yeah, but I wonder why? CoD:WaW was just released, how can L4D surpass that?

Well, CoD has it's previous iteration to compete with, L4D is a whole new beast. Also, what Frostbite said. No offense to CoD but there wasn't enough zombies in it.

CoD:WaW was not just released. It's been out since the middle of November, which is 3 months ago. It was released about a week before Left 4 Dead.

Also, don't forget that CoD:WaW is available on all platforms (360, PS3, PC, and Wii), and L4D is only on PC and 360.
