well, it's a shame the controls suck.
felt way too clunky, as if there was an external force stopping me from killing zombies.

You obviously have not played Resident Evil 4. No you cannot strafe while aiming, but that is purposeful. The game forces you to mind your surroundings, if you are getting swarmed it means you need to get the fuck out of that area. That means holing up in a building and making blockades, getting on top of buildings for better aiming, etc. Did you know you can quick turn as well.

There are 4 control schemes and 3 types of aiming styles, try them out. Also, this game is not Dead Space, its about your knowing the level design and its surroundings to succeed. Dead Space was more an action game like Gears of War, plus you were way overpowered with the weapons you got so the gunfights were not that scary. The controls suit the game fine.

Thats the point, you need to restablish your position, the tight areas make it even more tense, making you have to move about the close quarters. The only real tight area was the beginning part of shantytown, but you can leave the house at anytime and go outside, not sure where you are finding such problems. It just sounds like you are not moving about that much, its all about quick turns, running to proper cover, height, etc. and taking out enemies. Enemies also slow down when they get close, its not like they run immediately at you and jump on you.

Yeah, I hate to agree. I loved RE4 and the Control Setup A is like that game, I personally liked the Setup D.
But, after the leaps and bounds in gameplay, not being able to move and reload/shoot niggles at your mind.
I think Dead Space has taken me back to the old vein of survival horror... back to the days where Resident Evil felt isolated and alone and the scares were breathtaking.
RE5 demo was not scary for me but more about the frustration of fighting the controls. If I had a zombie swarm, I just ran through them to another spot so I could take my time to kill them.
Don't get me wrong, it's still good fun, especially with a friend. But it's not what the series use to be: A fright fest!
