Dawn of War 2 Getting More Maps Within First Week, Relic 'Extremely Interested' in Paid DLC

Relic Entertainment has revealed that it add two presumably free multiplayer maps to Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War 2 within a week of the game's February 19 release.

Producer Mark Noseworthy further informed the Dawn of War 2 Community site that, while the action-centric strategy game went gold yesterday, feedback from the forthcoming multiplayer beta will still be implemented through a Day Zero patch.

The beta, which kicks off tomorrow for owners of the Dawn of War expansion Soulstorm, will run until Dawn of War 2 ships to stores. Soulstorm owners will need to enter their product key into Steam to get the beta in advance of its public debut on January 28.

And though Relic has previously only spoken about "steady doses of free downloadable content" for Dawn of War 2, Noseworthy noted that it is "extremely interested" in offering both free and paid DLC through Games for Windows Live.

"There may even be some [GFW Live] DLC available during the first few weeks after the game's released if everything goes to plan," he added. It was not specified if this would be free or premium-priced DLC, but the producer assured fans that "we've got planned scheduled patches and data updates through 2009 and beyond."

Chris Faylor was previously a games journalist creating content at Shacknews.

Wait. Day 1 *paid* DLC for a computer game? How about I don't buy it and wait for user created maps?

That's the great thing about it! You can do whatever you want.

The sentiment might be more along the lines that content generated so soon after launch ought to be included with the $50 game one has just purchased.

Considering you're getting 4 full races. I don't have an issue with it. Maybe they should have broken the game up into 4 individual titles like Blizzard did for SC2?

Er, the day 1 DLC is free, actually.

Grr sorry. Week 1 paid DLC then ;)

I still find the concept of paid DLC so soon after launch very offensive. It turns a red light on in my mind that they cut content out of the gold release so they could sell it to me later...

          More like month 1.

I don't know about this content specifically, but these things typically take a long time to make, polish, debug, etc.

Relic probably stopped making content for this game months ago so that they could focus on polishing and balancing it for ship. Just because they get something out shortly after launch doesn't mean they withheld it from a game they stopped adding content to months ago. It's possible they have a few teams working on stuff...

Straight-up maps are about the only thing I wouldn't be willing to pay for. Units, wargear, scripted scenarios...those sorts of things I'd eat up without a moment's hesitation. I don't play RTSes competitively, though, so new maps wouldn't be a draw.
