Is pirates worth trying out for $15? I've always wanted to try that game out, but heard some pretty bad things about it.

I enjoyed the ship combat aspect of it. It was done well. However a huge chunk of the game is spent in-port running around and that aspect of it was terrible. The avatar combat was awful.

I played it for a few weeks after release, it had some game-breaking bugs. Those are pretty much fixed now, but let me warn you, this is a real, 100% hardcore PVP game where the mechanics often lean against you if the port situation turns ugly... to the point where you're unable to leave port without being sunk (ganked). Unless you enjoy that level of PvP I'd say give it a miss.

I did enjoy the ship combat. I had to learn a lot about real (historical) sailing!

I played the trial before launch, so I only got a small taste and saw no PVP action. What I did play was essentially Sid Meier's Pirates! online with a dash of EVE.
