So what's the word on this game? Can I assume it suffers from fundamentally flawed design like Gothic, Elder Scrolls, and Fallout 3?

Really! I'm still pissed that leveling up in Fallout 3 makes you weaker despite any gains in numerical damage dealt.

      Makes you weaker? What?

      Makes you weaker?

      What are you talking about.

What fundamentally design flaws do you speak of ?

It was discovered that leveling up in Oblivion reduces your relative damage output in order to make the game more challenging. Yes it is a stupid idea. Apparently not everyone agrees that Fallout 3 has a similar problem and I admit I didn't bother testing it on more than one character build. Gothic is just poorly designed all around.

By the end of Fallout 3 my character certainly didn't feel weaker.

The original game was great. It had really fun, interesting quests, Diablo style combat and character development, and Ultima style every item in the world is usable, often in combination with other objects in the world (mugs with kegs = full of beer, etc.)

It started with a simple hack and slash dungeon and many people wrote it off as a simple Diablo clone, but it was quite a bit more once you got past that.

I understand it kind of bogged down near the end (I got distracted by newer, shinier things before I finished) but it was worth the 30 I spent for it when it was new. You should be able to get it for $10 at Target I think, and if you have any interest in isometric action rpgs with a little something extra, I think it's definitely worth that price.

Beyond Divinity was officially not a sequel, but took place in the same world and used the same engine.

      It sucked.

They shoehorned in a 2 person party system that didn't really work, they set a huge part of the game in caverns that didn't have the same storybook appeal of the environments of the first game, they changed the character development in a way that made it feel dull and not fun. It still had Diablo style combat and fairly interesting quests (though not as good as the first one), but the other changes ruined the mix.

Both of these games suffer from slightly iffy translation at times. Beyond Divinity in particular suffers from awful voice acting the entire time.

I have no idea how Divinity 2 is going to play. As an isometric action RPG or as a first/third person Elder Scrolls type deal. Hopefully the former.

On xbox 360 it will be typical 3rd person. Not sure if they decided yet on the PC, it's possible they'll release it with both isometric as 3rd person viewpoints.

It's more of an action rpg than Elder Scrolls.

Put points into combat skills. Merely leveling isn't going to make you stronger in combat. My guy started out weak as hell but he's a monster now at level 15. Have you been keeping your weapons/armor up to date and repaired?

Sounds like someone didn't spend time on the proper skills.

huh? gothic controls were a bit awkward at first, but once you learn them the games were great. elder scrolls (i'm assuming you're insulting oblivion and not the brilliant predecessors) have had the same control feel to them all along. fallout 3, well, feels like oblivion controls in melee combat.

either way, this version of divinity seems to be quite different than the predecessor, so will be hard to say what it will feel like at the moment. hopefully its not something crappy like the witcher's controls.

leveling in oblivion DID make you weaker, the most powerful character in oblivion is level 2 with all the most useless skills as their "class skills", with the useful skill cranked up to maximum through training and use...

in fallout 3, it was nothing of the kind... even after you get your small arms to 100, you can raise your Repair skill (better quality gear = better killing), raise your throwing and barter skills (throw grenades around without worrying about the cost ;-) ), and so on...

raising your science and lockpick so you can get access to better gear...

and with a new perk every level, if you ever run out of combat focused perks, there are the
you can keep cranking up your Luck (more criticals) and so on...

Well at least someone in here was paying attention. I thought I was seeing the same leveling system in Fallout 3 as in Oblivion. As I leveled up I had to shoot mutant dogs more to take them out. My primary focus was Small Arms and related stats. Maybe something else was amiss but it appeared to be the same phenomenon from Oblivion.
