Newly Acquired Massive to Move Toward MMOs

World in Conflict (PC, 360, PS3) developer Massive Entertainment, which was bought by Ubisoft this week, has received the assignment of contributing to Ubisoft's MMO effort starting with "light MMOs."

"They are going to help us to also get closer to the MMO space," said Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot at a conference this week, according to Gamasutra. "In the future, we will come with RPGs and RTSes also in the MMO space."

Massive is known for the well-received RTS games World in Conflict and Ground Control, and Guillemot admitted that Massive's talent for strategy games is "extremely strong."

The studio joins the Ubisoft fold from previous owner Activision Blizzard, which put it on the selling block in August as part of a consolidation following the merger of the major-label publisher and the World of Warcraft developer.

"We bought [Massive Entertainment] from them because those guys are Blizzard, so they don't need that studio as much as we do," remarked Guillemot, referring to Blizzard's prowess in the strategy genre.

A pity, but it was to be expected. EA and Ubi fuck up almost every studio they buy.

More MMOs?. No, thanks. No KOTOR MMO, we want KOTOR3. No Massive MMO, we want WiC 2, dammit!

Don't give up on Massive just because Ubi bought them. Massive is one of those rare studios (a la Blizzard, Bioware, Epic) that is extremely independent-minded and makes only the high quality, really fun games they want to make. Their review averages back them up.

They've never compromised their goals or standards in the past for publisher demands pertaining to ship dates or "hot new features" so I don't expect them to do it in the future either, no matter who owns them.

Boohoo bitch stop whining about mmos's. I enjoy all types of gaming and I hope some one makes a mmo that eventually will narrow blizzards numbers in wow. The mmo market is untapped if they would just create a awesome game completely different from wow and did it right it would succeed and do great. Everyone instead wants to copy wow instead of thinking for themselves.

Define "copy WoW" please. Mention some MMOs that came out recently and did indeed "copy WoW", and by doing what. Thanks.

I think people assume that b/c you're a fantasy game that relies heavily on similar quests (kill 5 of x, bring me 10 of x, take this to x) that it's a WoW clone. There are so many details that change between these games...but people don't think about them.
