Cell Processor Shrinking to 45nm in 2009, Paves Way for PS3 Price Cuts

Sony and Toshiba will begin production of a smaller 45nm Cell processor in 2009, according to Engadget.

The 45nm version of the chip used in the PlayStation 3 will cost less than the current 65nm chip, while requiring 40% less power.

The drop in cost of the PS3 processor could lead to price cuts for Sony's game console should the hardware manufacturer upgrade to the newer chip.

I'm seeing no price cuts and just a strategy to cut costs for Sony themselves.

I own a PS3 so I don't care if the prices go down.. I just want a game to come out that's worth $60

      Grand Theft Auto IV? Gran Turismo? Burnout? They were all worth the money I spent on them to me.

        Uncharted, Ratchet, fl0w are great. I still play Resistance, it's awesome co-op game.

  Very few games seem worth $60, luckily most of my favorites aren't. Oblivion and Warhawk are $30 each. GT5 Prologue was $30 on sale, and SOCOM will be $40 (without the headset bundle) but it'll be worth $60 for that sweet headset. Metal Gear Solid 4, Uncharted, and Grand Theft Auto 4 probably are though. And there are a bunch of fun $10 games. There are lots more I didn't list that make the cut too probably.
