This sucks. I was so hyped about this game, but after hearing everyone just trounce it, I kinda shied away from it. WTF is truly wrong with it?
My original post was gonna say 'Is this the patch that adds the fun?', but since I hadn't played it, I figured that'd be an ignorant comment to say.-
There is nothing truly wrong with the gameplay, it's just more of what has been in past Unreal titles. The amount of content seen in the game isn't deserving of a new game. But if you're like me, and haven't played 2004 or 1999, then the game is great.
Other complaints mainly include the crappy UI, but than can be changed with mods if it really bothers you. -
It's basically UT2004 but with much better graphics. Like, graphics designed to max out your video card, but not go too far like Crysis. They did a poor job promoting it, it got released around the same time as a number of other higher profile games, the naming/packaging confused people (the first time I saw the box I thought it was for the 1999 version of UT - I didn't get that the three red bars were supposed to be the roman numberal "III") and most people never got around to buying it.
I got it two days ago for $20. It's not bad actually. I like it. -
I don't think there's much wrong with it at all, really. It stumbled at release because of misplaced fan backlash and never really recovered. Maybe it wasn't the right time for it either - it's hard to say.
That's not to say Epic didn't make mistakes, but I think UT3 deserved a far better reception than it got. -
Pace of the game feels slower than 2k4 at default speed. Could be a perception thing caused by the scale of the player or something, but it just feels slower.
Vehicles controls aren't as responsive as they were in 2k4.
Player movement slightly simplified compared to 2k4.
Personally, I prefer Onslaught to Warfare.
No Invasion.
No Bombing Run.
No Assault.
They should have junked the single player campaign and spent more time polishing the multiplayer. It's not bad, but it's got maybe half as much content as 2k4 did, and what's there doesn't feel as good. It was just a disappointment compared to an excellent predecessor.
It also came out in the middle of holiday 2007, with a really dumb marketing campaign focusing on the embarrassing single player story, at the same time as CoD4 was kicking every ass on the block. Their demo was pretty bad, too.
I bought the game anyway, on the strength of 2k4, and regret it. Hopefully they release a budget priced UT3k4 that polishes the game up like 2k4 did for 2k3. -
The vehicles looked cool in screenshot but aren’t much fun, mostly weak weapon systems and poor handling / physics. The lighting and textures are too dark, and there’s too much Asian influence in the graphics design; they did outsource the artwork to China and it shows.
Hoverboard? Why don’t they just skip all of that and give the players jetpacks and the ability to ski around the map.
Deathmatch is tired and played out; you don’t need to go online to play it as the bots are “good enough” opponents.
Why did they waste time on the lame single player component and scrap popular game modes like Assault?

fundamentally I think it's great...things are balanced...movement feels right...weapons are fun...it's just everything outside of actually playing the game is so terrible...from a user experience standpoint it's horrendous...the game itself is deep and complex but the menus are shallow and lack options...plus the launch just plain sucked...server browser was broken and obviously if players can't connect then you aren't going to last long...

As a lot of other people have said, this game is great. The single player story line is really weak/contrived, but it's not what you buy a UT game for anyway. I have to admit that when it first came out I was really disappointed because it felt a lot different than past UT games, largely due to the new style of graphics. However, I picked it up again a couple weeks ago and now I'm absolutely loving it. In my opinion it has the best version of the weapons usual weapons since Unreal.

The game simply didn't offer the sheer amount of content and fun that UT2k4 did. Or rather, it offered the fun of UT2k4 but by this point, most people who enjoyed the game are burnt out on more of the same.
UT needs nothing short of a total re-imagining of the series.
What is really annoying is that one company DID manage to breathe new life into UT gameplay.....Legend with XMP from Unreal 2. The SP sucked but XMP was fantastic and Epic could''ve only made it better but they chose to completely ignore it.-
Oh man, I was waiting for someone to mention XMP, that game was truely one of the best MP experiences ever.
It was a privilege to be part of that community even though it was short lived.
Epic should consider releasing a Unreal Engine 3 version of XMP, and make the effort to advertise it properly.. it isn't beyond them to take the correct approach.
How on earth could they screw up UT3's launch so badly. Oops, I know! it's all about the brain-dead consoletastic approach to games these days. Sigh.

The original UT was 10x more fun. The UI is pure crap. Epic touted the offline single-player aspect as something they wanted to focus on yet their are fewer options in using the bots than there were in the original UT. If you want more of the same from UT2004(another one I wasn't crazy about) it's probably a good buy.

It's a tough one if you're coming from UT2004.
A hardcore 1st person fan that isn't swayed by eye-candy would say "Why should I bother with an updated engine of a game when the previous version has around 5 or 6 huge map packs, a fantastic selection of mods like Killing Floor and Ballistic Weapons, solid gameplay, user-friendly interface, better customization and hosting support."
They really needed to push things forward, but they decided to take the console route and ignore some of the most fundamentally expected features for PC release. Bad move.
In saying that, I still have love for UT3, just that I find myself going back to UT2004, and that shouldn't really be happening. "No, no, UT3 is the next step, a new era."
Maybe it can be saved. Nvidia's recent PowerPack forceware release made for some good UT3 publicity.
It's one of those times when you can only wish that a game was more popular, because the potential is clear.
