BioWare Talks iPhone Development, MMO Genre
"We look at every platform that comes along. Obviously, something that's as big a cultural and technical success as the iPhone is something you really got to take a close look at," Zeschuk told MTV Multiplayer.
Game development on the iPhone has ramped up since the gadget's debut. Ports of EA Maxis' life-sim Spore and Sega's Super Monkey Ball, which make use of the phone's built-in accelerometers and touch screen, were announced last March.
"I think one of the things that we'll have to see how it shakes out is what type of consumer buys games on it and what type of experience they're looking for," he added.
BioWare CEO Ray Muzyka offered his perspective on the rapidly growing PC MMO market and the success of titles such as Blizzard's World of Warcraft and Funcom's Age of Conan in relation to the company's yet unnamed MMO project.
"I think it's also indicative that certainly World of Warcraft has grown the market," Muzyka said. "It's great to see their success and see what we can potentially do in there when the time comes."
Studies of the MMO market revealed to BioWare that the single-player component of the genre is just as crucial as the social elements, Zeschuk noted. "I think that's an important part of a successful MMO, that it allows for a single-player experience as well as a multiplayer experience. They've both gotta be awesome."
"Instead of forcing players to do things; allow them options and choices," Muzyka asserted. "They can tailor their experience. This is what we're trying to do with our game, as well. This is why we tend to not make linear games. The consumer expects that."
