Drive Up eBay Prices on Capcom Games, Improve Franchise Revivals Odds
"To choose titles to revive, we see if we can give old franchises the modern touch, and we evaluate the fanbase and see if there's a market for it," Diamonon told MTV Multiplayer. "Sometimes we see games on eBay, and that's how you see what games people are willing to spend $80 on."
Diamonon stressed that going prices on eBay isn't the only means by which Capcom—creator of the Mega Man and Resident Evil series, among numerous others— measures interest in its franchises. In addition to the auction site, the company also consults its own fan community and looks at GameSpot poll results.
Capcom has heavily leveraged its classic properties in recent console and handheld generations, releasing more than a dozen ports and remakes on Sony's PSP alone. Revivals of 1942, Bionic Commando, and Street Fighter II have been announced for downloadable gaming platforms.
Capcom's North American arm has exercised some degree of restraint in which remakes and ports it localizes, however. The recently announced Wii port of Resident Evil Zero, which only features a new waggle-centric Wii control scheme, has been twice denied release in North America.
The manager would not say which, if any, of Capcom's classic properties are next in line for a port or remake, saying only that "Capcom has a wide selection giving fans many choices."
