Samba de Amigo Wii May Feature DLC

2
Box art for Gearbox Software's Samba de Amigo (Wii) on games retailer GameStop's website indicates that the game will support some sort of pay-to-play content.

Unearthed by the internet detectives at gaming forum NeoGAF, the box art—while not necessarily finalized—is the first Wii box shot to feature the red Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection logo, which indicates pay-to-play functionality in the game. Given Samba de Amigo's maraca-shakin' rhythm roots, the evidence seems to point towards the availability of downloadable songs.

It wouldn't be the first Samba de Amigo title to feature downloadable content. The series' Dreamcast debut in 2000 also featured track downloads via the system's 56K modem.

But these downloads were 32 kilobyte keys which unlocked content already available on the disc, as evidenced by the Dreamcast's lack of internal storage space and use of the VMU memory cards, which had a maximum capacity of 128 kilobytes.

While by no means as small as a Dreamcast VMU, the Wii's limited internal storage capacity of 512 megabytes was cited by Harmonix as the reason for dropping downloadable content functionality from the upcoming Wii version of Rock Band.

Shacknews has reached publisher Sega of America for comment, but the company has not responded as of this writing. Samba de Amigo was originally slated to debut this spring, but the title is now expected for release later this year.

We're waiting to hear back from Sega, but it could be something as trivial as costumes or new characters. Or, if it is DLC, there's nothing stopping them from having the download be a small key to unlock a file already on the disc.
