Xbox 360 Now at 19M Units Worldwide

13
The Xbox 360 hardware has sold over 19 million units worldwide since its 2005 release, according to the latest financials from console maker Microsoft.

Rival console manufacturer Nintendo revealed yesterday that its cheaper Wii hardware has sold over 24 million units since late 2006. PlayStation creator Sony Computer Entertainment has not released any recent worldwide sales figures of its hardware.

Across the fiscal quarter that spanned January 1 to March 31, 2008, Microsoft as a whole reported a revenue of $14.45 billion. Of that, $1.56 billion came from the Entertainment and Devices division, the branch responsible for the Xbox and Zune music player brands, among others.

Taking operating costs, but not taxes or other expenses, out of the sum, the entire company was left with an operating profit of $4.4 billion, with the Entertainment division responsible for $89 million of that.

During the same time period last year, the Entertainment and Devices division brought in $936 million in revenue and posted a $324 million loss. This quarter's leap was mostly attributed to the strong performance of Xbox 360 hardware, Xbox 360 and PC software, and Xbox Live services.

And with an attach rate of 4.7 games per console, that means that just shy of 90,000,000 Xbox 360 games have been sold.

    That is fairly impressive.

haha I wish that my attach rate was only 4 or 5. I've sold or traded a few that I knew there was no chance of me ever playing again but I probably have a dozen that I'm still holding on to *just in case* I feel the urge to play one again.

Yeah, I think I'd have to say the same thing. I've bought a lot of games for the system... and there are easily about 10 other games I want, but I've been holding off because I have a backlog.

I thought the latest attach rate was 7.5 or something close to that?

I think 7 is the average per gamer, per console, over the course of a console's lifetime.

And for a Nintendo console, six of those will be Nintendo-developed games

I have 6 games (not counting Marvel and Forza 2) and 3 of them I bought used. So does that count as a 3.

I only have 3 for my Wii (Zelda, Metroid, Mario). I like my Wii too, it just needs more quality stuff. Less mini-games.
