Sony Sells 4.9 Million PS3s in Q3, Hits Profit Zone

8
Running high on improved sales of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable, Sony's game division has finally returned to profitability after six straight quarters in the red.

Sony sold 4.9 million PlayStation 3 units between October and December, as compared to Nintendo's sales of 7 million Wii consoles in the same time frame, according to the New York Times.

Yearly sales of the PlayStation Portable were also estimated to top expectations, with Sony adjusting its target to 13 million units. The company's fiscal year ends in March.

The profit increase is seen as a result of Sony cutting production costs and retail prices of the PlayStation 3, in addition to a larger supporting lineup of games.

Despite the overall upswing of the division, the PlayStation 3 is still running at a loss for the company, with Sony adjusting its sales forecasts from 11 million units to 9.5 million on the year.

    Good job Sony.

I'm glad to hear it. I like this system. It has Blu-ray, they let you upgrade the hard drive (my friend got a 120gig hd for like $60 and popped it in and the PS3 even formated it for him). I also love the fact you can install Linux on it with ease and basically have a full computer with emulators for NES/SNES/Genesis/etc. The Wii is a fun system as my friends have it, but out of all 3 new consoles this is the one I will buy.

I haven't bought one yet but I probably will soon, it just needs some more good games. And I wish they would freaken put backwards compatibility in the $399 model because I would use it. Isn't it just software emulated anyway?

No, that cheapest model is missing all the hardware that they used in other models. BC is gone on the low end.

Sorry Fred you are wrong, all the Playstation 3 models sold in Australia were missing the 'Emotion Engine' and all the emulation was done in software.

40gb PS3 has no emulation whatsoever, neither hardware nor software. 80gb model only has software. Your best bet would be to get a used 60gb, best bang for the buck. Hardware backwards compatibility, 4 usb slots, wifi, fully loaded.

The current 80 GB model emulates the PS2's emotion chip in software, but it still has the PS2's graphics synthesizer hardware.

The market is growing so it's hard to tell where the cap is.

Except the Wii is really the only thing growning the market.

With the possible exception of Rock Band/Guitar Hero.
