Call of Duty 4 Tops 7 Million Units Worldwide, Labeled Best Selling Game of 2007

After tallying figures from sales tracking firms across the world, publisher Activision now claims that Infinity Ward's Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PC, PS3, X360) was 2007's best selling game worldwide.

In all, the game sold in excess of 7 million units, according to data compiled from the NPD Group, Chart Track, and the GFK Group. Incredibly, that figure represents less than two whole months of sales, as the game deployed to stores in early November.

Of the overall figure, North American sales of the Xbox 360 version accounted for 3.04 million. The PC version, meanwhile, only sold 383,000 units at North American retailers, though that number does not include sales made through digital distribution platforms such as Steam.

Still, it's obvious that Infinity Ward is upset with the sales performance of the PC version, having already expressed amazement at the unexpectedly high level of piracy.

"This ground-breaking game and franchise continue to establish new standards by which all other action games will be judged," said Activision senior VP Will Kassoy. "Consumer and critics agree that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the best games ever created and further establishes Call of Duty as one of the premier brands in the industry."

Curious to see how many 360 units were sold compared to Halo 3.

Wait, wait, wait. So are they saying CoD4 outsold Halo 3? Am I reading that right?

lol, I'm stupid... When I see the word "platforms" I think consoles for some reason... PC/360/PS3

do they count the DS version?

Right, but now that I've looked at the story again there's reporting about the PC sales being 383,000 in North America. So even projecting that out across the rest of the world the PC number is all but negligible compared to the total (I bought it on Steam though). So that means the game sold a ton on PS3--about equal to 360 sales, right? Has the PS3 even sold 3 million consoles yet? Sounds like just about every single PS3 owner must have this game.

PS3 has sold over 3 million units in NA alone.

By the way, North American sales of Halo 3 vs. CoD4 on X360

Halo 3 (Bungie, Microsoft Game Studios, X360) - 4.82 million
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Infinity Ward, Activision, X360) - 3.04 million

Damn, now I really want to see a comparison of normal, retail PC sales versus online PC sales.

            no.
            7 million = worlwide total pc/ps3/360.
3.04 million = 360 only in North America.

They are saying that, at least with all platforms combined.

I'd expect that Halo outsold COD by a sizeable margin on the 360 alone, but with the extra PC and particularly PS3 copies of COD they were able to at the very least significantly close the gap if not take the lead.

Props to IW either way, though, those are phenomenal numbers no matter how you break them down.
