2K Offically Announces 2K Marin, New Studio Reportedly Formed by Ex-BioShock Staff
Said to be creating original intellectual properties as well as assisting with other 2K projects, 2K Marin is reported to be made up of some ex-BioShock (PC, X360) staff. BioShock was developed at 2K's studios in Australia and Boston, a tag-team formerly known as Irrational Games.
"We're focused on continuing to bring new brands and cutting-edge gameplay to market with the creation of the 2K Marin studio," said 2K president Christoph Hartmann. "2K Marin will build upon our success in creating and leveraging AAA franchises."

I know it's just a name, and there are very talented people working there, and BioShock and the Grand Theft Auto games are brilliant, but I have such a hard time imagining anything original coming out of something named "
".
It screams bean-counting fuckhead management, not creative studio full of bright people.
Why can't they give these studios more interesting names? They might as well label them Asset_#2452.4 and be done with it.

you could argue that it's poor marketing and brand management. before, Irrational was known as the System Shock 2, Tribes, SWAT, Freedom Force, and BioShock studio. all very highly regarded titles. but now, you're putting all those games under the same brand as, say, Ghost Rider and Fantastic Four. now, the good that BioShock did is negated by the bad that those games did.
i suppose as long as you keep quality overwhelmingly good, you're OK (and by the looks of it, 2K's line up is mostly very good, with Civ 4, Oblivion, etc.). but you're really putting all your eggs in a single basket that can be easily ruined by a few bad eggs.
what's even worse is that inevitably, you will want to leverage the brand's power to sell shit games. this is when you start tainting the name and it starts to lose its effectiveness. and it looks like Blizzard is gonna be falling under the same trap. -
