HAL's Kirby Super Star had players take on the role of Kirby, and saddled him with a foe-turned-friend sidekick for the bulk of the games. The title also allowed a second player to join in as the buddy, and each partner--such as the Fighter or Ninja--had a specific move-set.

From the screens of the game seen on other websites, the game appears to be pretty much a direct port of the Super NES title with a few added flourishes. Kirby Squeak Squad for the DS, the most recent Kirby release, also featured the traditional Kirby sidescrolling gameplay.
