EVE Online Developer Expands, Opens Atlanta Studio

EVE Online developer CCP Games is expanding into North America, the company announced today. The new office is located in Stone Mountain, GA and will serve as the company's North American headquarters.

Much like the company's studio in Iceland, a former fish processing plant, the new branch will focus on massively multiplayer online games. In addition to maintaining and continually upgrading the persistent online universe of EVE Online, CCP is also developing an MMO based on White Wolf's World of Darkness property, which it began after the two companies merged in 2006.

Within the next year, CCP North America hopes to fill more than 100 design and development positions.

"CCP Games is excited to be at the epicenter of the US online gaming industry," said CCP North America president Mike Tinney. "Following the merger of CCP Games and White Wolf Publishing last year, we look forward to expanding our CCP North American team and player base over the course of this year."

Low cost of development. Most developers are paying a fortune for their people, benefits, and locations in CA.

Well, White Wolf's office was already in Stone Mountain, so I guess they decided to stay there.

Yeah I think the only reason they did it there was because that's where White Wolf is.

Sure it might have lower cost of living there, but I don't think it's got a huge amount of talent (people with lots of experience making games). So they're going to have to try to get people to move there... and to that I say good luck. They would have been much better off choosing: Seattle, Cali or Texas.

Well, here's to hoping EVE gets some some servers on this side of the water for faster/less lag response time :-)

Stone Mountain is just minutes away from Atlanta as well. Which is a huge IT hub on the east coast.

I live right next to Stone Mountain, GA - and the heart of downtown Atlanta is less than 13 miles from my driveway. It's not "rural" in any sense of the word.

There's a massive amount of IT and Design work in the area, and some decent schools as well. SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) has a branch in mid-town, and AIA has a game development program. It should be easy for them to find local labor.

But at the same time, Stone Mountain area still *looks* nice. Not all strip malled and expresswayed to death...There's still some nature out there. And then, yeah; it's not far from the stores, nightlife, businesses, etc.
