Nintendo Expects Wii Shortage Problems Through Holidays

19
Following up on his promise of flooding the marketplace with an "unprecedented" number of Wii consoles, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime (pictured left) has admitted that there is no way the company can meet consumer demand this holiday season.

"The issue is not a lack of production. The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that," Fils-Aime told the San Jose Mercury News. "And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on. We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand. As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't."

The president went on to recommend that hopeful Wii owners check out "all of the likely suspects"--Best Buy, Circuit City, GameStop, Toys R Us, Wal-Mart--and ask about this shipment schedules, which Fils-Aime said should be frequent.

"The only other pragmatic advice is that we're aware of the situation, and we're working very hard to address it," he continued. "Believe me, I'm constantly pushing for more capacity and more volume."

"Ask about shipment schedules" - that doesn't work. Not when I was trying earlier in the year anyway. They just said either "I don't know" or "Check back anytime, they ship all the time". Same story different day.

A year later and it's STILL impossible to find. Thats either quite an achievement, or Nintendo needs to hire more slaves to work their factories.

Luckily for me my hunt already ended months ago.

In a department store, I know for a fact there are shipment schedules. Best Buy and Circuit City actually must know what they're receiving a day before it arrives. It's part of their whole inventory process that they paid millions for to get it developed. If you call and ask and they give you the b.s. response, it's just because they're being lazy and just ask for their name and request to talk to their supervisor/manager.

they are not obligated to provide information on shipments of items. Then when you call in because "JOHN" said we would get some tomorrow and we dont have them on the shelf you complain.

When i worked at BB they were told to hold xbox360's for the add circular coming up etc.

I would say it's quite an achievement given that they've now outsold the Xbox 360 and that console had a year's head start and no inventory issues. This is the first time they've done this since the SNES outsold the Genesis (marginally, like 54% of the market, and only after DKC came out).
