EA Takes First Steps Toward Full Team Online Play

FIFA Soccer 08 will allow ten players to football it online with a downloadable feature following the release of the game, EA announced today. Arriving six to eight weeks after the October 9 release of FIFA Soccer 08, Be A Pro: Online Team Play will be available free of charge for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 users.

The five-versus-five play will put five players on each team with six AI teammates. The move is the first step toward having full 11-on-11 online play as a downloadable update to FIFA Soccer 08 or future FIFA installments, according to the announcement.

How likely will full online team play be for further EA sports franchises such as Madden Football? "I guess it comes down to how well this feature is received by consumers," an EA spokesperson told Shacknews. "I know at EA once one of the franchises comes up with a pretty good idea, we share that kind of information with how we do it, and generally the other games will follow."

It's all up to the developers - create a game of football that accurately portrays the real sport and everybody gets to play.

I mean, I can't remember the last time I went to a football match and saw a guy just stand their for minutes at a time - except the keeper, of course :)

one of the good things about sports games, especially soccer ones, is that you can control anyone on the field. you always have the ball or are controlling the player going for the ball on defense.

i've played a few 2 player same team sports games and it just isn't as fun as 1v1 head to head.
good luck getting all 10 people to stay in their positions too. i could totally see all 10 players in a pub on a huge group around the ball, just like pee-wee soccer.

i'm sure there will be a group of people somewhere who love this feature though.
