Vivendi Confirms Double Fine Deal

15

Publisher Vivendi Games has officially confirmed its deal with developer Double Fine Productions, first uncovered last week. The agreement will see Vivendi's Sierra Entertainment label publish the next game from the studio founded by design veteran Tim Schafer (Full Throttle, Grim Fandango). Interestingly, the press release subheadline refers to the game as a "Tim Schafer title," promoting a level of name recognition relatively uncommon in the games industry. No details were given on the game's platforms or genre(s).

Did the box from Psychonauts say something like "a new game from the mind of Tim schaefer" ?

Yeah. As far as I know, Schafer is the only guy in the industry whose name appears on the front of the box of every game he's worked on.

        What about Sid Meier?

I'm pretty sure he was only on the back of the box or the manual for Monkey 1 and 2.

Why not Will Wright? He should get it written into his contract!

It doesn't seem to have the effect they're hoping for, though.

It doesn't hurt, and it doesn't cost any money. It can only help, I'd think. Plus, even if it doesn't sell copies, who cares? It's a really positive thing, and something I'd like to see more often in this industry.

Not me. Celebrity is ridiculous and tends to obscure people's perception of the actual quality of the work, at least to my mind.

As a developer, it kind of stinks when a group collaboration like a video game wears the name of only one team member.

I much prefer the Blizzard way, where the credit the game design to the whole company.

I really like the Valve way. The credits at the end of Episode 1 was an alphabetical list of EVERYONE that worked on it. It was communism at its finest.
