QC: Soldier of Fortune 2

12
Well, just spent a little time walking around at QuakeCon and got the opportunity to player some Soldier of Fortune 2. Raven's showing 4 levels from the game at the event, with most of the weapons available it seems like. Each level is very distinct just to give you a good feeling of the game. There's a helicopter level, kind of like the SiN demo, you just fly around and shoot buildings/people. This is actually pretty fun. Another level takes place in a hospital. Not very exciting, but nice nonetheless. One of the cooler levels is still the Columbia junge level. You really feel like you are in a jungle with all kinds of plants and trees around you, hard to see where the enemy is shooting from. Cool stuff. This is also one of the levels where you have AI team mates helping you. The last level they are showing takes place in the streets of Hong Kong. There are NPCs walking around, cars are driving, and lots of bad guys shooting at you. Gotta love the sniper rifle and the assault shot gun for this one ;)
Raven is putting the Q3 and TA terrain engine to good use, with detailed levels, weapons and characters. The gore is a little more realistic this time, not any gun will shoot off limbs, though there is still plenty of blood.
People who liked the first game will definitely want to pick this one up when its released.
Kenn Hoekstra told me the levels are all done, except for some optimization. They'll start recording the sounds soon and get working on making the game faster (it was fairly slow in some areas at this point), for an alpha later this year. They hope to ship the final product in early 2002. A multiplayer expansion might ship after the game.
