    you're not special.. it's pretty normal to be overwhelmed at the beginning. lemme take a crack at this.
    
    i'm going to assume that the big picture you're looking for involves hanging out with us shackers, so that would make your next big goal joining the shack corp (NWS) and moving out to our spot in 0.0 space. to do that you're going to need to be at least in a battlecruiser (drake is good) with decent support skills. to do that takes two things: isk and time. the isk thing is pretty straightforward. you've already got salvaging so that's a good first step. basically do this:
    
    - train destroyers 1 and science 4
    - read my salvaging guide here: http://www.shacknews.com/laryn.x?id=15931397#itemanchor_15931397
    - keep rocking the merlin because i assume you're still on L1 missions
    - watch this video: http://www.evecast.com/node/123 to find good agents
    - start doing missions for agents in the caldari navy corporation with high chance of giving you a combat mission. you can see how the divisions break down here: http://eveinfo.com/npcdivisions/
    - skill up social to 3 and connections to 2. this will get you to L2 missions faster.
    - once you have a good L2 agent read up here http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=571635 on how to outfit that caracal.
    - run L2 missions and keep salvaging until you are at L3 missions. sometime in there you will be able to afford a drake.
    - this whole time you will be making pretty decent isk and learning about the game. or you will have lost interest and given up!
    
    at some point you are going to find yourself in a drake and ready to move out to 0.0 space to do some ratting for real cash. it took me about a month but i went out a little earlier than i probably should have. we can talk about what that entails then.
