  • One of my earliest gaming memories revolves around first seeing my uncle play the original release of Master of Orion for the first time.

The first time I saw it, i was enthralled. Previously, I had seen a few games on my cousin's 286. Wolfeinstein 3D, Captain Comic, Golf...but nothing that compared in scope to the majesty of Master of Orion. I think what floored me the most was realizing the complexity of the game. Seeing my uncle go through all the different menus, seeing the results of a planetary bombardment,, contacting alien races.

Most of all, what amazed me most was the ship-building, and being able to take that ship, that you modified, that you named into battle. And then trying to keep that ship alive while those tiny little missiles sped towards your ships in turn-based increments.

I was 8 years old at the time, and even at school, I couldn't stop thinking about how incredible Master of Orion was. I remember having to do some kind of project where the class had to decorate the wall in pieces of art, and ALL of my pieces were entirely ship designs that I had dreamed up, and wanted to build in Master of Orion.

Fuckin' A. I'm gonna go load up MoO II.
