Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced Edition coming in November

Like the original, Baldur's Gate 2 is getting an "Enhanced Edition." Beamdog has been hard at work, having produced scads of new dialogue in May, and has now announced that it will hit PC on November 15. It will cost $25, and iOS and Android versions will follow sometime later.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced pulled over 'contractual issues'

Update: With more comments from Oster.

A contractual dispute with "a publishing partner" has forced Beamdog to pull Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition from its site and the Apple App Store, leaving in doubt the future of DLC and patches for the game, as well as the upcoming planned sequel.

"I'd say it could be resolved in a few weeks at best," Beamdog president Trent Oster told Shacknews. "Worst-case, it could be a while. We've been trying for a while to work through the issues, so the legal request to take the games down wasn't unforeseen."

Baldur's Gate 2 Enhanced already has 350,000 words of new content

Things have been awfully quiet from Beamdog after the release of Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition late last year. We know they are working on DLC for the game, and also a Baldur's Gate 2: Enhanced, so we contacted the company to find out just what was going on in the land of Faerun.

"We're hard at work on BG2:EE and it is going well," Beamdog president Trent Oster told Shacknews. "Phil (our design lead) mentioned to me there is over 350,000 words of new content."

Baldur's Gate 3 almost made by Obsidian in 2008

Baldur's Gate 3 almost made by Obsidian in 2008

Fallout creator Black Isle Studios was supposed to continue BioWare's RPG series Baldur's Gate a decade ago with a third core game, but that vanished soon after being announced. Years after the developer shut down, though, Baldur's Gate 3 almost happened again, at the studio founded by several Black Isle veterans, Obsidian Entertainment. Feargus Urquhart has revealed that it almost signed with Baldur's Gate owner Atari around 2008 to make a 'new' BG3, but the deal fell apart.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition review: classic reborn

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition review: classic reborn

A woman in Spain made headlines when she "restored" a 19th century art fresco of Jesus. While good-intended, the amateurish result was hardly recognizable. Messing with a classic can go horribly wrong if you don't know what you are doing, something I recalled as I started to review Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition. Changing a beloved game invites increased scrutiny from fans, even more so when adding to it.

Although publisher Beamdog is a newcomer to the gaming landscape, many on the team helped lovingly craft the original RPG as part of BioWare back in 1998. It's clear that they've managed to keep the classic--this time coupled with the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion--intact.
