It’s been over twenty years since Adam Fenix’s Immulsion Countermeasure destroyed all Immulsion on the planet Sera and did away with the Locust and Lambent threat. With the planet practically ravaged and the human population reduced from billions to mere hundreds of thousands. In an effort to preserve humanity and rebuild the population, the Coalition of Ordered Governments (or COG for short) has created walled-off and heavily guarded cities placed under strict martial law to protect its citizens from the dangerous wind storms and threats that have arisen on Sera’s feral surface.
Not everyone has become particularly fond of the COG’s draconian way of keeping everyone safe, however, and a group of human survivors have broken away to make a go of it themselves outside the city walls. Called the Outsiders, these people frequently raid COG outposts and storehouses for supplies and defy the efforts to keep them protected, effectively locked in a Cold War with the Coalition.
Gears 4 is a tighter, more focused story swapping catastrophic, apocalyptic-level events for a more close-knit, tightly-wound story centered on the lives of Marcus Fenix, Anya Stroud, and their son JD.
Following the events of Gears of War 3, Marcus takes some time off to mourn the loss of basically everyone that ever mattered to him and settle down with Anya. Once he’s all grown up and ready to wield a chainsaw gun all his own, JD and his friend Del Walker escape the COG and meet up outside the walled-in civilizations with their friend Kait Diaz and her group of Outsiders. Together the three friends will have to work alongside an even more grizzled, bearded old Marcus to deal with a new threat that has been mysteriously snatching up their friends and family.
