When you enter The Division’s PVP area, The Dark Zone, you put your life in the hands of other players around you. This guide will teach you how to survive the area and how to make it out alive with all your loot.

Trying to play on PC, but aren’t sure if your computer can handle it? Check out The Division’s PC specs to find out if you’re ready to take on the Dark Zone.

Make Sure you are Prepared for the Dark Zone

The biggest mistake you can make is to head into the Dark Zone before your character is prepared for it. We suggest leveling your character up by completing side missions, and the available story missions at the start of the beta. Once you’ve done this, your character should be leveled up enough, and well enough equipped, to handle the dangers waiting for you in New York’s Dark Zone.

We’ve found that entering the Dark Zone with an assault rifle and a marksman rifle is a fantastic way to make sure you’re well enough equipped to take out any threats inside.

Watch out for Rogues

Your number one enemy in the Dark Zone, aside from the random NPCs scattered throughout the street, are Rogue soldiers. Rogue soldiers are player characters who have recently killed a non-hostile agent. If you see a Rogue Agent you should prepare yourself for a fight, or scamper away down any side alleys you might find.

Extract Your Gear

As you make your way around the Dark Zone you’re bound to pick up gear and experience from killing Rogues or taking down NPCs. Once you’ve had your fill of items and you’re ready to extract, make your way to one of the extraction zones and send up a flare. Chances are though, you won’t have to send up your own flare, as other players will probably be trying to extract with their gear at the same time.

Once the extraction has started you’ll have to wait around a minute and a half for the helicopter to arrive. During this time you’ll want to stay hidden in the shadows, behind cover, as much as you can as Rogue soldiers, and other entrepreneurs will be looking to take a slice out of your hard-earned goods.

Once the helicopter arrives, and the area is clear of enemy soldiers, head for the marker and hold down the USE button to load on your items and secure your gear. Once the gear is secure, and the extraction helicopter leaves, your items can be redeemed at your Player Stash in the Base of Operations or at Camp Hudson.

Don’t Trust Anybody

We know, those white outline players marked as non-hostile agents can be reassuring when you’re going into a battle zone. But if you’ve got the yellow contaminated bag on your back that signifies Dark Zone gear, don’t trust them, as any of them could be looking to stab you in the back when you aren’t looking.

Avoid “Going Rogue” When Possible

It can be tempting to shoot your friendly neighborhood players when you spot that bright yellow bag on their bag. While they might have some good gear, you’ll want to avoid “going rogue” as much as possible. Not only does it broadcast your position to every player in the area, but it also puts you at risk of losing more items, and more experience when you die. It should also be noted, that having one player “go rogue” in a group will automatically make the entire group turn rogue.

If you do have to go rogue, we suggest finding an easily defendable spot to help keep your items safe. Just watch out for anyone trying to collect that bounty on your head.
