Blizzard considering selling insta-90 upgrades

World of Warcraft's upcoming Draenor expansion includes an instant boost to level 90, and Blizzard has said it has plans to test the ability to purchase those instant-boosts directly.

Blizzard is pretty comfortable admitting that the late game is the strongest point in World of Warcraft, and the new Warlords of Draenor expansion will include an instant boost to level 90 so you can skip right to it. The studio seems to have figured out that people might pay for such convenience, and has announced plans to test that soon.

A post from the Battlenet blog reviews the pre-order bonuses, but near the end says that soon it will be testing a feature to let players purchase the character upgrade boosts directly. It says it bases this on feedback from players, who say they want some way to quickly bring their alts or characters on other servers up to snuff without buying multiple copies of Draenor.

If you can make do with just one insta-90, you'll actually be able to get it before the expansion is even released. The blog says that pre-purchasing either of the digital versions will get you the boost right then. Pre-purchasing the Digital Deluxe version will similarly net you the exclusive pet and mount upon purchase.

Blizzard says it's giving out the bonuses early thanks to feedback from players who would like the chance to get acquainted with their level 90 heroes before venturing into the Draenor conflicts. Draenor will raise the level cap to 100, so you'll still have some grinding to do.

A closed beta test is scheduled to begin sometime soon, and Blizzard dropped a helpful reminder to opt in and make sure your profile is up to date if you want to be eligible.

Its funny. Leveling is the part of the game I hated. I had about 30 days played and I hated every minute I spent leveling. The best experiences I had were raiding and such.

Paying to level up annoys me though. I just wanted the game to be the raiding part.

It's fun the first couple times, but when you're itching to get current and play with your friends, 1 through 85 really sucks.

It's probably one of the biggest things that keeps an old player from coming back to WoW. Imagine if you quit in TBC or Wrath and you were interested in the new content in WoD. You'd have to spend days/weeks leveling up to 90 to see the new content that got you excited to come back. It's similar with new players. If you want your friend to come play WoW with you, and you have one or more max level, geared up characters, you're not going to want to start over just to play with your friend while he levels and he's not going to want to level on his own for quite a while just to be able to start playing with you.

Honestly leveling was my favorite part too. I quit during WotLK but I think I had 5 level 80 characters and a priest was the only class I hadn't gotten to at least 50. I did raiding too, so it wasn't just leveling but I enjoyed that way more than dailies or crafting or any other "in between raids" content.

yeah in my first bout with WoW i played till level 60 and it got pretty boring after that since it didn't feel like I was making any progress anymore.

They already crippled the leveling experience for the pre-MOP stuff but this pretty much outright kills it.

Right now most people queue for dungeons instead of leveling in the actual zones. The items and rewards don't scale well with the XP they give so there is little incentive to do them over dungeons.

Trying to make the leveling experience in WoW new is a lost cause. The game's over nine years old now. The game's largely about endgame stuff, and this helps people get into it sooner.

It's definitely worth quest levelling through once. The Cataclysm revision of the old world was excellent, I enjoyed it a lot. A second time though? Fuck that, heirlooms + power blasting dungeons FTW.

Sure, but this sort of stuff isn't really targeting people who haven't done it once.

I've done the leveling thing three times now, and TBH it's not something I want to do again, but there are classes I wouldn't mind having a max-level alt of for times when I'm not feeling like playing the main (assuming I still played).

I think at last years Blizzcon someone asked if it were possible to get this option, to a huge cheer of approval from the crowd. Of course it seems like a slippery slope, but on the other hand why not offer the option.

The reasoning of the person who asked this at Blizzcon was that you essentially already will have this option the way Warlords of Draenor will grant you one free level 90 char for your account. It would be kinda expensive though:
        - Buy nth WoW Account in your name
        - Upgrade to Warlords of Draenor
        - Make level 90 char
        - Transfer to your main account
        - Let extra unused account lapse

So I'm glad they are thinking about making it easier than this process for people who don't want to level to 90 the old fashioned way.

So long as it applies to leveling I'm okay with it. I just don't want to see it bleed over into gearing.

Blizzard makes some dumb decisions here and there, but I don't think they'd ever do pay-to-win. At least not before it goes F2P, which given the current subscriber base, isn't happening any time soon.
It's been proven time and time again that people are willing to shill out tremendous amounts of money for cosmetic items and mounts, so there's no need to sell the gear.
On that note, I would not be averse to transmog/heirloom gear being up for sale.

      fuck gear resets.

Just level reset now. Have some sort of mana destroying explosion (sunwell 3.0!) and destroy all the worlds magic.

All max level characters drop down to level 40. Next xpac takes it back up to 50. Compress the shit out of all the old content, explosion didnt happen in outlands or draenor, and bam, theres your re-worked harder content.

I'll be honest, this appeals to me a little as a non WoW guy but someone who enjoyed War3 and the lore. I'd love to be a 90 and go facestomp some earlier quests just to see the story....

but then again pricing would be the issue. I'd enjoy it but its not worth a lot to me.

If you want to experience the lore, just level through normally through questing; tons of lore there and you get through quickly and easily with any character. WoW is a really amazing game. If you've never played it, you should check out the trial.

It barley makes you learn anything because you can't lose XP or levels, so as long as you can kill one monster, then that's all you need to know to get to max level on any character.

ideally you'll pick up which skills to use for which situation, how to min/max stats, combos, etc. unless you have a patience of a buddha or doing an ironman challenge of some sort, you're going to become familiar with with the class and gain proficiency.

true, but its easier to adjust if you have experience playing the class before facing end game content than facing it right at the start.

They should have offered this long ago, cheap level to the beginning of the newest expansion. Part of the reason it took me so long to come back to mop is the class I wanted to play was level 70, and I had no interest in wotlk and cat leveling again.

The whole fun for me when I played was the progression toward a goal, getting better, and being able to overcome mobs and areas that before were far too dangerous to venture into.

There was a certain satisfaction in being able to defeat an area that just a week or so or whatever area woulda been insta death if you tried to wander into

      i don't mind this.

i hate leveling these days. it was fun in vanilla for my first character. maybe even my second. but now if i want to play another class i'm just like nooooooope because leveling is such a bore.

insta 90'ing would be great. but i guess you don't learn anything about how to play that class until you've played it for awhile. and there would be no gradual introduction to skills or mechanics.
