Video: how to replace your PS4 hard drive
Yes, you can replace your PS4 hard drive. It's not the easiest process in the world, but it's not too shabby either. Given that every PS4 game requires hard drive installation, the 500GB drive included with the system may fill up quite quickly, so you may want to use this feature sooner rather than later.
Gamespot made a nifty new video showing off how to replace the PS4 hard drive. As you can see, it's quite easy. As a bonus, they replaced the hard drive with a SSD (solid state drive), which has the immediate benefit of making Resogun load twice as quickly. See for yourself:

I believe it was told that the PS4 does not have TRIM support,
but most new SSD have built in garbage collection that should help prevent that from happening
but my experience with that has not been optimal, so TRIM is still preferred way to go.
but seeing that SSD are becoming more common these days, it stands to reason that Sony will patch in the TRIM feature on the OS level eventually. -

You can use the external HD for games, etc... http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/xbox-one-hard-drive/
Could be nice if you are going to a friends house. Take your external HD with you and then just log into their X1 and your games are ready for you -- no idea if that scenario will actually work.

I said this and some people laughed at me --> http://www.shacknews.com/chatty?id=30863604#item_30863604
I knew it, we are all going to need larger drives I am trying to decide what to do with the PS4 with the XB1 I am getting a external 2 tera right away.
To me SSD is not the ticket with the PS4 your going to run out of room way to fast, I would say go 2 tera min.
Imagine running out of space and having to nuke and re install everything that would majorly suck does the PS4 not allow external hard drives? I am going to look this up.... if it does that is what I am going to do. -

A "500GB" drive is actually 465GB in proper 1024 units. Reports today have shown 408GB available on a mostly empty drive so the OS is reserving about 57GB for itself and its operations. I don't think it's all that unreasonable when you consider that includes space reserved for a restore partition, swap space, probably some sort of work area where it does background downloads, and that it's also writing the last 15 minutes or so of footage for the DVR feature.

Cool I will, here is the best I found so far it is actually real good: 1.5TB 2.5 9.5mm 5400 SATA 3
http://www.amazon.com/HGST-Travelstar-2-5-Inch-Internal-0J28001/dp/B00EDIU5IW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1384400409&sr=8-1&keywords=HGST+1.5tb+2.5
I know it be cool if the speed was 7200 but really the stock HDD is 5400 so what ever really it is all about space, sure a 2TB 10000 would be ace @ 9.5mm but good luck with that.
I may just get this with prime and call it a day, who knows when that 2TB mega drive will be out, by the time you fill this up larger drives will be out.
Well this is my thinking process.

Hmm, there seems to be conflicting reports then - most sites have been reporting 12.5mm drive fit. If you look at this image I grabbed from the official teardown it looks like there's plenty of room in the bay for a larger drive than what's stock (which is a 9.5mm drive).

I guess we'll find out for sure once someone takes it apart themselves any day now. -
